About The Phoenix Guild of Puppetry...
In May of 1959, a small but enthusiastic group of Phoenicians met to form the Phoenix Guild of Puppetry. They were housewives, teachers, and businessmen and women of diverse backgrounds, but each shared the common bond in their love of puppetry. From the beginning, their hope was to learn, grow, and educate others in the art of puppetry. In 1961, the the group had met the requirements for, and received its charter from, The Puppeteers of America, Inc., our parent organization.
Members may attend regional as well as national festivals, where they have the opportunity to study with and see performances by top national and international puppeteers and puppet artists. Registrants at these festivals attend workshops to learn such techniques as stagecraft, puppet construction, puppet costuming, and manipulation. At home, the Phoenix Guild of Puppetry usually holds ten meetings per year with programs and and workshops.
The only requirement for membership in the Guild is an interest in puppetry. Through working together and studying together, we hope to improve our talents and expand our skills in puppetry; make puppetry good theater and make it entertain--whether it is used to teach a lesson, make a point, or just for fun.
